Ambush Drake
The group rests briefly in the meat storage cave before pressing forward. Steve and Shiv reconnoiter and perceive something moving in the cavern ahead; upon closer inspection the see six small dragon-like creatures scavenging among the dead Stirges. They have Jory stealthily haul the largest and most spoiled cut of meat to the cavern and hurl it down at the creatures; half of the creatures move to the meat. Davron peers out and two of the creatures aggressively move towards him. Steve attacks one of them and knocks it over and Shiv kills it. Jory attacks the other one, dealing a massive amount of damage and Karendil and Steve kill it. They decide to slay the other creatures in case they have to double back through the room.
From the next room they hear Draconic being spoken and they sneak forward to see eight Kobolds busying themselves. Steve, in panther form, pounces on one of them and the skirmish begins. The group rushes in behind Steve and attacks the startled Kobolds; the fight is brief and brutal but one of them calls out before he is killed and in moments the group hears approaching footsteps. Eight more arrive in the room, armed and alert and the group dispatches them before continuing down a flight of stairs surrounded by a metal cage. The room below looks like an animal training area, with a few animals left roaming about. The group toss the dead Kobolds into the room to let them be devoured and move on.
They continue through the lair and to a sub-level to find an altar with a blue half-dragon kneeling before it, flanked by two barbarians. The group attacks them while their backs are turned and the dragon turns and says imperiously, “I would’ve given one of you a chance to an honorable trial-by-combat, but since you have no honor: kill them all!” He breathes lightning at Steve and Shiv, dealing massive damage to them both. Davron mass heals the group and screams “Come to me, coward!” at the half-dragon. After a lengthy battle they slay all three and inspect the room. The cavern is carved into an intricate shrine to Tiamat; a wall motif features Tiamat rising from a volcano and dragon carvings line almost every wall. They sit and rest for a while.
A chest lays near one wall that is a feature of the cavern and cannot be moved. There are a disproportionate number of black dragons upon the chest. They have Shiv inspect it for traps before opening it while Davron casts Detect Magic on the rest of the room. Shiv successfully disarms the trap in the chest and they take the haul and continue on. Approaching the next corridor they notice 4 Kobolds lying in wait to ambush them, who they kill swiftly and move on. Before the last of them dies he yells, “Get them—don’t let them escape!”
Roper
The group continues into a dark room and from out of a pit in the mist arises a mass of ropy tentacles. A voice emerges and says, “Before you dispatched those Kobolds I had agreed I would help pull you down here so that the dragonlings in the mist could get you. You got anything you might offer?” They identify the creature as a Roper and the group offers it the rotting corpses from the other room in the cave; the Roper accepts their gifts and warns them that a group of Kobolds are guarding dragon eggs.
Karendil persuades the Roper to help them and he offers to grapple the dragonlings if the group will finish them off. He grasps them and the group fires arrows into the dragonlings until they are dead. The group continues and discovers three large black dragon eggs. They plan to haul them out once their exploration is complete and continue to the last portion of the cave. They arrive at a ladder leading up to a trap door and Shiv climbs it. As she pushes the trap door open she realizes it is beneath a rug and someone on the other side attempts to use magic on her. She throws the door open and shouts at the others to help her as she climbs up into the room.
The room is the most well-appointed and appears to be a bedchamber. A woman backs out of the room and Shiv lashes her with her whip; she hastily retreats, shouting “They’re coming up the chute—stop them!” Shiv gives chase, lashing her again but doing no damage. The others hasten up the ladder and into the room and see 7 armed soldiers rushing to attack them. 4 more soon rush in the aid them. They skirmish with the men and kill them all and notice the woman has run off. They follow her trail and come upon a room and hear two men arguing; one man is chastising the other for being impetuous and getting him into trouble and the other responds that it was crucial in order to get information. The rush in and see the woman laying prone on the floor and Tharasun One-Eye arguing with Leosin Erlanthar. Tharasun greets Davron and he explains that the woman tried to move the two prisoners and they just incapacitated her. He goes on to recount their abduction when they had been investigating the Cult of the Dragon; their questions got the attention of the local cultists and Rezmir ordered them to be kidnapped.
The group puts together a cart to haul the dragon eggs and the prisoner back to Phandalin.
