The barricaded room provides a safe haven. Karendil cleans the bugbear beds and the group sleeps in them after stacking the dead bodies in the corner. They sleep a full evening and awaken refreshed and ready to search the rest of the cave. They awaken to the sound of the doorknob squeaking and they realize that Shiv is missing and one of the dead bugbears is gone.

Davron approaches the door and shouts in Goblin, “Who disturbs my sleep?”

“You lazy bastards need to wake up; it’s our shift to sleep,” a gruff voice answers.

The group readies their weapons, yank the door open, and Karendil launches a fireball into their midst. The explosion roils throughout the halls, disorienting and wounding the bugbears, and the group charges out of the room and lays into the stunned enemy. The bugbears fight furiously, gravely wounding Jory in their counter-assault. Jory casts Second Wind and restores himself before rejoining the fray.  They kill the lot and continue towards two pair of massive stone double doors behind which they sense great magic emanating.  One pair of doors stand partly open and Steve-as-bear approaches the door to sense what he can beyond it.

spectator

A Spectator, guardian of the mine.

In the center of the room is a brazier from wherein burns a magical green fire.  He can see two indistinct shapes floating in opposite corners of this room, which is built to human proportions.  They creep into the room and are met by two Spectators, who simultaneously speak to them psychically:

“Greetings!  Welcome to the Forge of Spells.  Master Bandalen has stepped out for the moment; we’re sure he’ll be with you soon.  Please do not touch anything while you wait.”

They keep their hands to themselves and survey the room, which is filled with work tables and equipment.  The walls are lined with shelves, and those shelves are filled with items.  Davron sees a magical war-hammer of Tempus on one of the shelves and the Spectator provides information about the weapon: “You see the war-hammer ‘War Bringer’, forged by the artisans of the Phandelver Mine for the Cleric XYZ, etc.”.  Embra finds a magical dwarven breastplate embossed with a gold dragon.

Ochre Jelly

Ochre Jelly

Embra and Davron leave the room and make plans to attack the Spectators.  As they return to the room Embra is attacked from behind and hears a pop and sizzle coming from her armor.  She wheels to face a Ochre Jelly, which she casts Vow of Emnity upon and smites with her axe.  The blow splits the being into three separate pieces, but Embra’s Divine Smite destroys one of the three sections.  Jory strikes a section and it splits into two.  Karendil uses his new wand, hitting the creature with Magic Missile.  Steve claws at and reluctantly bites the Jelly, destroying one of the sections.  Jory hurls a molotov cocktail, setting Steve on fire and destroying the remainder segments of Ochre Jelly.  The group finds a map to another dungeon and within the burned chest they find treasure.  The group posts watch and sleeps in the room.

The following morning the group re-enters the workshop and Davron attempts to fool the Spectators into realizing their master is dead, but they do not respond to his trickery.  The group enters the room, attack the Spectators, and destroy them.  They continue onward and as they make their way through a corridor a pack of Stirges descend upon them and attack them.  After wiping out the Stirges, the group makes its way to the front entrance of the mines.  They find the assayer’s office and there discover a collection of scrolls and a massive room beyond filled with corpses—it looks as if a great many died in a battle.  Embra looks for the sigil of her kinsmen among the dead and as she walks around the room the dead slowly rise and attack the group.  Jory propels himself at a shambling Minotaur and strikes it savagely, Karendil hurls Magic Missiles into the mass of dead, Steve claws and bites at two undead, Embra flanks Jory’s target and kills it with two strikes of her axe, and Davron casts Turns Undead and half of their assailants flee.  The group hacks and slashes at the host of undead until the last one is defeated.

Davron, Karendil and Embra collect the corpses of the dwarves and consecrate the dead.  Davron heals the group while Embra collects sigils of the dead for the purposes of contacting their families.  The group barricades the room and sets camp for the night.

    Group: Nuh-uh.
Karendil: We were looking for our friend!

Steve: *after his Bite attack on the Ochre Jelly*  UGH…
DM: It tastes just like the shrimp ceviche we had last night.

  • Family Trend
DM: Oddly enough, this would be one of those times it would be helpful to have your rogue with you.  She’s got all the sneaky, fast-talky skills.
Karendil: But we don’t have her.
    Davron: She ran away.
Karendil: We don’t know that.  She could’ve gotten kidnapped.  She was on watch.
Davron: Her whole family gets kidnapped.
  • Yep, Jory’s Back.
DM: There are two [Ochre Jelly] left.
Jory: I’m gonna take one attack on each.
    Embra: With that molotov cocktail?
Jory: No, with that friggin’ molotov cocktail.
    DM: *puzzled*… okay.
Embra:  That’s what I asked him.
DM:  Okay.  Did you warn your fellow party members that you were about to do this?
    Embra: Probably not.
Jory: I yell, “Fire in the hole!”
*catches Steve on fire for 4 points of Fire damage*
    Jory: Sorry!
